The Journey of Argyle's Pink, Red, Blue & Violet Diamonds
19 August 2021
Formed more than a billion years ago and found only in one extraordinary place on earth, the Argyle diamond mine produced virtually the entire world’s supply of pink diamonds. Remarkably, just a tenth of one percent of diamonds yielded from the mine was pink. Even more seldom occurring were the coveted reds and exceptionally rare violets and blues.
Of all diamond colours, pink is the most intriguing. Unlike other coloured diamonds, the phenomena of pink diamonds is yet to be discovered. One of Earth’s greatest mysteries, it is thought that the colour is created by a twist within the atomic lattice during formation, the result of immense heat and pressure beneath the earth’s surface – a fabulous fluke of nature.
No other diamond mine in history has produced the range and variety of pink colour seen at Argyle, from the warm blush of pink; to the brightest sparkle of cornflower blue; to the vivid intensity of the rarest red and the exceptionally rare violet. Unlike colourless diamonds, an Argyle pink diamond is graded foremost on colour before clarity and cut- its value determined by the intensity.
The deeper, more intense the colour, the rarer, more valuable, desirable, and ultimately, collectible.
