The Allure of Yellow Diamonds from the Ellendale Mine
12 JUNE 2024
While we adore the timeless appeal of classic white diamonds, the vibrant, summery lemon hues of yellow diamonds can be irresistible.
Master Craftsman, Rohan Milne, was fortunate to secure one of the last remaining boxes of 78 rare yellow diamonds unearthed from the Ellendale Mine. These stones, formed over centuries and unearthed in Western Australia, have completed their journey from Earth to market. They were cut by the former Argyle Pink Diamond cutters here in WA and are now housed in our Mount Lawley Atelier in Perth.
The Ellendale Mine: A Brief History
Among the most renowned sources of these radiant butter yellow gemstones is the Ellendale Mine, once situated in the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia. The now closed Ellendale Mine was a significant player in the diamond industry since its discovery in the late 1970s.
Known for its prolific output of fancy yellow diamonds, Ellendale quickly garnered attention for producing gems with exceptional colour and clarity. At its peak, the mine was responsible for 50% of the world’s yellow diamond supply, cementing its reputation as a premier source of these stunning stones. They became famous internationally for their notable partnership with Tiffany & Co.
What Sets Ellendale Yellow Diamonds Apart?
Vivid Colour: The yellow diamonds from Ellendale are prized for their intense, saturated colour. This vivid yellow hue is a result of nitrogen atoms present in the diamond’s crystal structure, which absorb blue light and give the stone its characteristic colour. They typically are a true yellow, without the presence of orange or brown.
High Quality: Beyond their striking colour, Ellendale diamonds are also known for their remarkable clarity and brilliance. The mine’s diamonds often exhibit fewer inclusions and imperfections, making them highly desirable in the market.
Provenance and Rarity: As the demand for unique and ethically sourced gemstones grows, the allure of yellow diamonds shows no signs of fading. With the closure of the Ellendale Mine, these diamonds are no longer produced, making them scarce in the market. As time passes, it is becoming increasingly rare to source and own one of these renowned gemstones.
